Snorkeling and diving in July
Offshore snorkeling is challenging this month.
Typical visibility sits around 5 metres because Kusi wind stirs seabed sediment and adds wave action. Deep-reef snorkeling and sites such as Vuma Caves are usually a poor fit. Book a glass-bottom boat that stays inside the shallow, protected coral gardens of Watamu Marine National Park, where the inner reef still shows fish and coral even when the open ocean is murky.
Winter sediment and swell keep snorkeling near 5 m. The marine park is still visitable by glass-bottom boat; it is a weak month for deep-reef snorkeling.
Ocean conditions in July
July is the first full whale month. Breeding Stock C3 has completed the 4,000+ km run from Antarctic feeding grounds. Adults use Watamu’s relatively warm, shallow, protected inner water as a calving and nursery area — newborns lack the blubber to linger in polar seas. Kusi keeps the surface energetic, which is exactly when humpbacks show the acrobatic surface behaviour (breaches, tail slaps) that whale-watchers come for. Visibility and kitesurfing sit on the other side of that same wind.

Which Watamu boat trips fit July
Wind, visibility and wildlife this month decide which trips make sense. The table maps the packages people actually book in Watamu onto those conditions.
Boat trip fit for July in Watamu
| Trip |
Fit this month |
Why |
| Humpback whale safari |
Peak whale safari |
Breeding Stock C3 humpbacks are in Watamu waters. Book a dedicated whale-watching window rather than a generic snorkel hop. |
| Whale shark watch |
Off-peak |
Whale sharks are rarely reported close to shore this month. |
| Glass-bottom coral gardens |
Best marine-park option |
A glass-bottom hull lets you read the coral gardens without fighting sediment in the water column. |
| Deep sea fishing |
Excellent |
Large billfish follow the active Kusi currents along the Watamu drop-off. |
| Kitesurfing (Garoda) |
Peak season |
Steady onshore Kusi winds make Garoda Beach a serious kitesurfing month. |
| Mida Creek dhow cruise |
Highly recommended |
Mida Creek sits behind the mangrove line and stays sheltered when the open ocean is rough. |
What to pack for a July marine day
July packing is about the sea state above, not a generic beach list. Take what the month actually asks for.
- Warm deck layer — 25°C water and 20-knot wind feels cold after an hour
- 3 mm wetsuit if you still want a snorkel dip in the lagoon
- Binoculars for whale blows before the boat closes the gap
- Kite equipment if Garoda is the other half of the trip
Local captain’s note for July
Watch the inner reef line, not only the horizon. Mothers with small calves often loaf in calmer lagoon water while adults breach in the chop outside. A captain who only charges offshore can miss the nursery.
